The new Chief Justice (CJ) of Rajasthan High Court Akil Kureshi takes oath today. Governor Kalraj Mishra administers the oath of office to Justice Kureshi at 1 pm at Raj Bhavan. They reached Jaipur on Monday night. He has been transferred in place of CJ Indrajit Mahanty of Rajasthan High Court.

Transfer orders by the Union Law Ministry for Justices Kureshi and Mahanty

On the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, the Central Law Ministry had issued an order to transfer Justices Kureshi and Mahanty on Saturday itself. Justice Akil Kureshi is due to retire on 7 March 2022. However, his tenure in the Rajasthan High Court as a Chief Justice will be only for about five and a half months. Justice Akil Kureshi was born on 7 March 1960 in Gujarat. He did LLB in 1983. Kureshi started practice as a lawyer in the High Court of Gujarat. Kureshi became a judge of the Gujarat High Court from the lawyer quota in March 2005. However, after this, he was a judge in the Bombay High Court.

Justice Kureshi's grandfather Ghulam Rasool Kureshi had worked with Gandhiji. Also, the grandfather of Akil Kureshi participated in the Dandi Yatra as an aide. Father of Justice Akil Kureshi, Hamid Kureshi was a senior advocate as well as a trustee of the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation Trust and Memorial Trust. Akil Kureshi's father was one of the last people born and living in the Sabarmati Ashram which was established by Gandhi in 1917.

Kureshi had come to the attention for delivering the verdict against Amit Shah

Justice Kureshi is one of the senior-most judges of the High Courts of the country. While being a judge in the High Court of Gujarat, he had come to the attention for delivering the verdict against Amit Shah and the Gujarat government. In 2010, Amit Shah was ordered to be sent to the custody of CBI. Also, Justice Akil Kureshi had upheld the appointment of retired Justice RA Mehta as Lokayukta in 2012.
