The affordable and popular two-wheeler Kinetic Luna of the 1970s- 80s may return to the market once again. However, this time Luna will be coming in an electric avatar.
Kinetic Green, a subsidiary of Kinetic Group, is preparing to bring the brand Luna back to its electric avatar. The electric Luna may come with lithium-ion batteries and a 1kW motor. Once fully charged, it will run for 70-80 km. Its top speed is expected to be 25 kilometres per hour, i.e. it will be a slow speed electric two-wheeler.
The design of the electric Luna is expected to be largely similar to that of the original Luna. You can get the latest features like LED daytime running lights, USB charging and thumb starter. The on-road price of the electric Luna is expected to be less than Rs 50,000.
Kinetic Luna was one of the most popular two-wheelers of its segment in the 1970s and until the mid-1980s. The ad that came with the tagline 'Chal Meri Luna' was quite popular. It was used to get a 50cc gearless engine. Luna was provided with paddles so that it could be driven like a bicycle. By the 1990s, sales of high-performance motorcycles saw a significant decline in sales. The company then ceased production in the early 2000s.
Iconic brands are returning to their electric avatars. Bajaj Auto launched its iconic brand Chetak in its electric avatar last year. Electric Chetak scooters are currently available in select cities such as Pune and Bangalore. The Bajaj Chetak scooter and its tagline 'Our Bajaj' have been quite popular.
Let us know if Kinetic Green has not made any announcement regarding the launch of Electric Luna. The company says its focus is currently on electric bicycles and electric rickshaws. However, the report quoted sources claiming that the company is also considering an electric two-wheeler.
