Khela Hobe Divas is being celebrated in West Bengal today. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that football will be distributed to needy children on this day. At the same time, the party's state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said that this is an initiative to promote sports for character and nation-building among children and youth. BJP leaders are looking at it through a political lens, which is not right.
In fact, during the West Bengal Assembly elections this year, the Khela Hobe slogan was used a lot. Banerjee repeatedly used this slogan against the BJP, which was the main contender against the TMC in the election. She says that this political fight will continue till the BJP is ousted from power at the Centre.
Questions are being raised on the program by linking it to the 'Great Calcutta Killing'. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta said that on 16 August 1946, the Muslim League started Direct Action Day, after which the Great Calcutta Killing started. Khela Hobe has become a symbol of a wave of terror attacks on opponents in today's West Bengal.
Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari had met Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar last week along with several witnesses. During this, he appealed to change the date of Khela Hobe Divas. After this Dhankhar asked Banerjee to change it, but she did not agree to it.
Addressing the crowd at Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata a few days ago, CM Banerjee announced the scheme named Khela Divas. Under this, the West Bengal Sports and Youth Affairs Department will give more than 1 lakh footballs to various sports clubs. He said 10 balls would be given to 303 clubs under the Indian Football Association (IAF). Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan and East Bengal will be given 100 balls each as tokens.
