New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is suffering an elbow injury, has pulled out of the first edition of The Hundred. He was not able to play the first ODI series against Bangladesh and then the Indian Premier League (IPL) in early 2021. Although his elbow injury is fine, but he is not 100% fit.
According to a report in Cricinfo, Williamson is expected to join Birmingham Phoenix in a mentoring role as he is still in the UK after the WTC final win against India. Meanwhile, New Zealand batsman Finn Allen may replace Kane Williamson in the T20 Blast with Lancashire. Apart from him, Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has also withdrawn from the event as Pakistan is touring West Indies for limited-overs series.
Meanwhile, South African pacer Lungi Ngidi set to join the Welsh Fire and could be available for five matches. Last month, Australia opener David Warner and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis withdrew from the inaugural edition of The Hundred. He was supposed to play for the Southern Braves. The Hundred is a 100-ball cricket competition, in which the leading players (both men and women) will compete in the tournament.
Several Indian women's cricket team players will get a chance to play in The Hundred League. Among them, players like Smriti Mandhana, Shefali Verma, Deepti Sharma. Jemima Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur will get a chance to play in the first season of the Hundred League. Shefali Verma got a chance after Sophie Devine pulled out of the tournament.
