In order to create public awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation, National Statistics Day is celebrated every year on 29 June in our country.

The purpose of celebrating this day is to make people aware of the importance of statistics in daily life and in the process of planning and development. 

An eminent statistician in India, the late Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis

The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the eminent statistician of India, the late Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis. He was a famous Indian scientist and statistician. He is known for his draft Second Five-Year Plan. After the independence of India, he became the Statistical Advisor to the newly formed Cabinet and designed the plan to fulfil the government's prime objective of ending unemployment through the rapid growth of industrial production.

Mahalanobis's fame is due to Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure suggested by him. He established the Indian Statistical Institute. The Government of India celebrates his birthday, June 29, every year as' Statistics Day 'in recognition of Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis' remarkable contribution in the field of economic planning and statistical development. The purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness and inspire the public, especially among the younger generation, about the role of Prof. Mahalanobis in socio-economic planning and policymaking.
