IOA to Bid for 2026 or 2030 Commonwealth Games

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said on Monday that it would submit a bid to host the 2026 or 2030 Commonwealth Games. The IOA also agreed to withdrew its threat to boycott the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham over shooting's exclusion. IOA, the apex body of the Olympic Games in the country, will now approach the government to get the necessary approval to host the Commonwealth Games. India hosted these games in 2010. This decision was taken during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) here. IOA Secretary General Rajiv Mehta said, "We have decided to submit a bid to host the 2026 or 2030 Commonwealth Games and we have also decided to send our team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games."

The IOA also approved the proposal of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) to host the Commonwealth Shooting Championship separately before the Birmingham Games. It is expected that this will compensate for the removal of shooting from the 2022 Games. The IOA will soon send the proposal of the NRAI to the Commonwealth Sports Federation (CGF) for approval, after which the CGF Executive Committee will decide on it. Last week, the CGF asked the NRAI to send a formal proposal in this regard by early next month.

Significantly, in 2010 the Commonwealth Games were organized in India. The Indian players performed brilliantly and won a total of 101 medals. India was second behind Australia in the medal table, securing 38 gold medals.
