79 year old Sheikh Haseena is set to take have fourth term as prime minister of Bangladesh. Awami League party won 204 seats out of 300.
Haseena won 8th election in a row from Gopalganj-3 seat with a lead of 2.49 Lakh. out of Total votes casted Nizamuddin of Bangladesh Supreme Party could only get 469 votes.
Indian Ambassador to Bangladesh Pranay Verma went to congratulate Sheikh Haseena and extend wishes on behalf of PM Modi. Meanwhile, Russia and China has also extended wishes to Haseena.
Post Casting her vote Haseena said ' We are lucky to have India as reliable and trustworthee friend. in 1975 When my family perished they gave me and my sister shelter.'
Bangladesh has 3 main political parties Bangladesh Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jatiyo Party. The BNP, however did not participate in the elections.
As per BBC report, Sheikh Haseena has maintained close relations with india since coming to power in 1996. In 2001, BNP's Khalida Jiya became Prime minsiter. Her Stint saw a rise in violence against minority Hindu community. 2001 marked crossborded firing between Indian BSF and Bangladesh Para-military.
