Explosives-laden drones targeted Irbil International Airport late Saturday night in Northern Iraq. The attack took place near the airport where US-led coalition troops were stationed. No victims have been reported so far. This information was provided by security forces and officials in the Kurdish-controlled region.

Two explosives-laden drones targeted the airport

The Kurdistan anti-terrorist government has said at least two drones loaded with explosives headed for the airport. No one was injured in the attack. Also, a spokesman for the northern region, Lock Ghafoori, said the bombs had fallen on the outskirts of the airport and dismissed reports that the attack would affect planes. He said the airport was still open and Kurdish authorities were investigating.

Earlier on July 8, rocket attacks took place in the Green Zone of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where the US embassy was located. However, there were no casualties. After this, the US presence in Baghdad and military bases in Iraq was not targeted by drone and rocket attacks for nearly two months. That is the attack which taken place on Saturday is the biggest terrorist attack in nearly two months.

Shia Muslims have taken the responsibility for the attack

US officials blamed Iran for the incident. The US suspects that with Iran's help, Shia Muslim rebel groups have taken responsibility for fighting 2,500 American troops stationed in Iraq.
