Indian Women hockey team striker Lalremsiami won the 'FIH Rising Star of the Year'Award. The International Hockey Federation announced this on Tuesday. The 19-year-old striker from India defeated Argentina's Julieta Jancunas and the Netherlands' Frederick Malta, who finished second and third. The player from Mizoram received 40 percent of the vote. She received 47.7 percent votes from national associations, 28.4 percent from media and 36.4 percent votes from fans and sportspersons. Lalremsiami remains an integral part of the Indian team after making her debut in 2017against Belarus.

She scored the most goals against Korea in 2017 and Spain in 2019. At the FIH Series Finals in Hiroshima, India defeated eight other teams and made a place in the Olympic qualifiers. India topped the table by beating America. Lalremsiami's father had passed away during the tournament, but she decided to continue her game. She later said, 'I wanted my father to be proud of me. So I decided not to stop and play. '

Lalremsiami, who came out of a small village in Mizoram, said, 'Hockey is not very popular in my village. Very few people play but I was always interested in hockey. That is why I decided to go to Thanjal, which was far away from my village. I had to spend the initial years in hostels. '
