London: Anvi Bhutani, an Indian-origin anthropology student from Magdalen College, Oxford University, has been declared the winner in the student union by-election. Anvi Bhutani, the co-chair of the Racial Awareness and Equality Campaign in the Oxford Students Union and chairperson of the Oxford India Society, was a candidate in the by-election for the 2021-22 academic session.
Record-breaking voting was recorded in these elections. She was declared the winner on Thursday night. According to the 'Cherwell' student newspaper, Bhutani included in his manifesto the FIRs such as the imposition of Oxford livelihood pay, the separation of welfare services and disciplinary action and further diversifying the curriculum.
In her victory manifesto, Anvi said, 'Use suggestions from student campaigns to work with initiatives such as Oxford and the Center for Colonization to make the curriculum more diverse.' It said, 'Promote more funding for existing mental health support programs, work towards more access to university counseling services and shorter waiting times.' According to the newspaper, the highest voting ever recorded for a by-election.
Prior to this, Rashmi Samant was the first Indian woman to be elected President of Oxford University Students Union. However, he resigned after a dispute and had to undergo a by-election. She is doing her MSc in Energy Systems subject from Linacre College, Samanta University. In the election, he won a grand victory by securing 1,966 votes out of 3,708 votes. Samant studied at the Manipal Institute of Technology in Karnataka.
