Indian-Origin Seema Nanda Confirmed as New Solicitor for US Labour Department

The US Senate on Friday elected Indian-American civil rights lawyer Seema Nanda the solicitor for the Department of Labour.

The US Senate on Friday elected Indian-American civil rights lawyer Seema Nanda the solicitor for the Department of Labour. 48-year-old Nanda was confirmed by the Senate with 53-46 votes. She has served in the Department of Labor in the Obama administration. She has also been the CEO of the Democratic National Committee.

Meanwhile, Judy Chu, chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific Caucus, expressed her happiness over the Senate vote. She said, "I am thrilled to congratulate Seema Nanda on her confirmation to serve as Solicitor for the Department of Labour. Whether it's risks from coronavirus, rising temperatures from climate change, or unscrupulous employers, workers continue to face difficult challenges every day."

Chu further said, "Her office will play a central role in fighting legal battles and challenges. With experience as the deputy solicitor and chief of staff at the Department of Labour under Secretary Tom Perez, I know that Seema will be a champion for workers" rights and vulnerable communities from the very start."

Nanda earned graduation degree from Boston College LA School:

During the Obama and Biden administrations, the US Department of Labor has held the divisions of Nanda as Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff and Deputy Solicitor. Nanda is currently a Harvard Law School Labor and Work-Life Flow Scientist. She earned a graduation degree from Brown University and Boston College LA School

Earlier in April last year, Nanda had announced to step down as the CEO of the National Committee of the main opposition Democratic Party. However, he did not give any reason for leaving the post. Nanda's father was a dentist. Studied at Brown University and Boston College Law School, Nanda has worked in the Civil Rights Division of the Law Department.
