Myanmar's deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been sentenced to four years in prison. A court in the country has sentenced this for violating Corona rules and inciting discontent against the army. After this sentence, Suu Kyi will not be able to contest elections in the country. The government backed by the army has promised to hold elections in the country in 2023. Earlier, a court sentenced two members of Suu Kyi's party to 90 and 75 years in prison on corruption charges.
Suu Kyi is also facing trial in corruption and criminal cases. Suu Kyi's supporters, however, say that the cases against her leader were deliberately created. The effort of the people is to justify a military coup.
Last February, the military overthrew the elected civilian government. Suu Kyi has been under house arrest since then. The army showed strictness on the demonstrations after this coup. A large number of people died in the army action. Suu Kyi is accused of election rigging. Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, was the head of the country's government until February 2021. Reports say 1,300 civilians have been killed in protests against the coup and more than 7,000 were detained. While a large number of people have been displaced.
