13 Killed in Firing by Security Forces in Nagaland, Angry Villagers Set Vehicles on Fire, SIT will Investigate

13 civilians died in an incident in Nagaland. After the incident, angry villagers set fire to the vehicles of the security forces. According to local media reports, the incident took place in Oting village of Mon district, where the villagers were returning home in a pick-up truck.

It is believed that due to a mistake in identification, the security forces opened fire on civilians. After seeing the bodies of the people, angry villagers set fire to the vehicles of the security forces. Many people have also been injured in the incident.

Following the incident, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio appealed to the people for peace and said that the incident would be investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). According to sources, the death toll may increase in the incident.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio tweeted- ‘The unfortunate incident leading to killing of civilians at Oting, Mon is highly condemnable. Condolences to the bereaved families & speedy recovery of those injured. High-level SIT will investigate & justice delivered as per the law of the land. Appeal for peace from all sections’.

No official statement

However, no official statement has come so far about how, when, and under what circumstances the firing took place.

According to the local media of Nagaland, the security forces were conducting an operation against the militants. During this, the incident happened.

When the relatives started the search for their relatives, the bodies were found.

The incident came to light when all the villagers did not reach home on time. After this, their family members started the search and their bodies were found. On seeing the dead body, the villagers got angry and they set fire to the vehicles of the security forces.

IPS Rupin deleted the shared video

State IPS officer Rupin Sharma shared the video of the incident on Twitter. He wrote – ‘There is news of the death of many civilians in Oting village, including the security forces’. He had also shared pictures of the fire in vehicles. However, he later deleted the video.

Home Minister Amit Shah expressed grief

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has tweeted and said that- ‘Anguished over an unfortunate incident in Nagaland’s Oting, Mon. I express my deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives. A high-level SIT constituted by the State govt will thoroughly probe this incident to ensure justice to the bereaved families’.
