Maharashtra's Mother Teresa 'Sindhutai Sapkal' Passes Away, was Honored with Padma Shri in 2020

Padma Shri awardee senior social worker Sindhutai Sapkal passed away. According to the information received, Sindhutai breathed her last at a hospital in Pune at 8.10 pm on Tuesday night. 75-year-old Sindhutai Sapkal died due to a heart attack. She was hospitalized for the last 1.5 months. She was known as the “mother of orphans”.

Sapkal, who was awarded the Padma Shri last year, was admitted to Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune. She was hospitalized for the last 1.5 months. She was known as the “mother of orphans”. Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, medical director of the hospital, said Sapkal had undergone a hernia operation about one and a half months ago and was not recovering fast. She passed away on Tuesday, at around 8 pm due to a heart attack.

Last rites with state honors

According to the Chief Minister's Office, her last rites will be performed with state honors on Wednesday. BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis tweeted that Maharashtra has lost a mother. She grew up in the face of adversity and devoted her life to those who were rejected by society.

Growing up in poverty, Sapkal had to face great difficulties in childhood. Born on November 14, 1948, in the Wardha district of Maharashtra, Sapkal was forced to drop out of school after passing the fourth standard. At the very young age of 12, she was married off to a 32-year-old man. After giving birth to three children, her husband left her even when she was pregnant. Her own mother and the village she grew up in refused to help, forcing her to beg to raise her daughters.

She established institutions for orphans. She has adopted and cared for more than a thousand orphans in 40 years.

Adopted more than 1000 orphan children

Sindhutai Sapkal overcame these circumstances with her own will and started working for the orphans. She established institutions for orphans. She adopted more than a thousand orphan children in 40 years. Apart from the Padma award, she received more than 750 awards and honors. She used the prize money to build a shelter for the orphans. Her efforts led to the establishment of a well-equipped orphanage at Manjari in the Pune district.

She looked after her adopted children at her Sanmati Bal Niketan Sanstha in Pune. She had adopted more than a thousand orphan children and used to take care of their education and upbringing. A film on Sindhutai's life was produced in the year 2010 and it was also appreciated in many film festivals.
