IIT Delhi and BIS Collaborate for Standardisation and Conformity Assessment

In order to make the process of standardization more effective. Indian Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi.

Prof. V Ramgopal Rao, Director of IIT Delhi and Ms. Surina Rajan, Director General of the BIS, signed the MoU.

BIS and IIT Delhi have also agreed to set up a Centre of Excellence in the field of standardization, testing and conformity assessment.

What will come out of this association?

According to MoU, IIT Delhi will provide infrastructure support for R & D projects of relevance for standardization and provide financial assistance to IIT Delhi for BIS projects.

Rao highlighted that around 50 faculty members of the institute are part of the technical committees of BIS and hoped that the memorandum would strengthen the collaboration further.

Rao underlined the importance of involving youth in standardization and discussed various possibilities of incorporating standardization in IIT, Delhi's educational curriculum.

He also emphasized that the development of technology innovation and standards will be done seamlessly to promote the development of technology-oriented products and services.

Rajan highlighted the upcoming areas like '5G Application Layer Standardization', where BIS has gained an edge over the ISO / IEC

He underlined the importance of standards especially in ensuring financial security in the financial sector and stressed the need for active participation of technical institutes like IITs to increase the status of India from 'standard manufacturers' to 'standard manufacturers'.

She further stated that creating synergy among premier educational institutions with the involvement of young minds in the area of standardization process would benefit the country, the young mind's involvement in the standardization process area will benefit it like the young minds use their creative ideas to do the project effectively.

Initially, the MoU will remain in force for a period of five years and can be extended further.

As per the MoU, both the institutions will jointly organize training and short-term education programmes on standardization and conformity assessment, besides exploring the possibility of the hiring of IIT Delhi faculty as consultants on a secondment basis.

The MoU will also explore the possibility of using laboratory facilities available at IIT Delhi for catering to the requirements of various conformity assessment schemes of the BIS.
