Delhi University in its Executive Council meeting has decided that in the coming days, new colleges and centres of Delhi University will be named after Veer Savarkar and late BJP leader Sushma Swaraj. According to DU Vice-chancellor Yogesh Singh, this proposal was unanimously passed in a meeting in August.

The decision was taken in the meeting

The Executive Council meeting was held in August in which it was suggested to name the newly formed colleges and centres of the university after Sardar Patel, Sushma Swaraj, Swami Vivekananda and Veer Savarkar. In the meeting, the council had also suggested the names of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Savitri Bai Phule, Arun Jaitley. However, the right to take the final decision on this was given to the Vice-Chancellor. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh has approved all the decisions of the previous meeting in the EC meeting held on Friday. Also, it has been decided that the new centres and colleges that will now be built will be named after Veer Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj.

Many teachers objected

It is worth noting that there was a debate in the political corridors about Veer Savarkar in the past. Many executive council members also objected to it in the meeting held on Friday. According to CK member Professor Rajpal Singh Pawar, DU is behaving like a cheerleader of the central government. Colleges are named after those people whose history can be taught to children, many such scholars have emerged from DU, but to name the college after someone who has nothing to do with the history of DU, we object to it. Also, we had talked about naming the college after Sardar Patel, Jyotirao Phule, Saheb Singh Verma.

Differing opinions emerged

Now the views of different members of the Executive Council are coming to the fore in this matter. If Professor VS Negi is to be believed, many teachers are opposing it motivated by politics. People should know about the unsung heroes of the country and it is time that we give them respect. Many members have said uncontested that they want a college named after Veer Savarkar and it will be implemented soon.

BJP's National General Secretary- Mahila Morcha, and former DUSU secretary Deepti Rawat said, We welcome the decision to name Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) colleges after Veer Savarkar and Sushma Swaraj. Our coming generations should know who has sacrificed for the country.
