BJP Nominated Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam for Rajya Sabha By-Election

BJP has nominated Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Assam. At the same time, Union Minister of State L Murugan has been declared as the candidate from Madhya Pradesh

Almost all the parties have announced their candidates regarding the by-polls to be held for the 7 seats vacant in the Rajya Sabha by the Election Commission of India. BJP has nominated Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Assam. At the same time, Union Minister of State L Murugan has been declared as the candidate from Madhya Pradesh. Let us inform you that Sonowal has been the Chief Minister of Assam. At present, he is a minister in the Modi cabinet.

By-Elections are to be held for six seats

Let us tell you that out of these seven seats, by-elections are to be held for six, while elections will be held for one seat in Puducherry. Bye-elections will be held on 1-1 seats in West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh and for 2 seats in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, for 1 seat of the Bihar Legislative Council, a by-election has been announced on 4 October. According to the Election Commission, its notification has been issued on 15 September. Along with this, elections on one seat of Puducherry are also scheduled to be held on October 4.

According to the Election Commission, the Rajya Sabha seat has been vacant since the resignation of AIDMK leader KP Munusamy from Tamil Nadu on 7 May 2021. KP Munusamy's tenure as a Rajya Sabha member was till 2026. Also, one more Rajya Sabha seat is vacant after R. Vaithilingam's resignation. R. Vaithilingam's tenure was till the year 2022.

Entry of Sonowal and Murugan to the Rajya Sabha

Both the leaders have recently been included in his Council of Ministers by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. While Sarbananda Sonowal has been given the responsibility of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and AYUSH in the Modi cabinet, L. Murugan is the Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Information, and Broadcasting in the Modi cabinet. Both the leaders will have to become members of parliament within 6 months. The entry of Sonowal and Murugan to the Rajya Sabha is almost certain as the BJP enjoys a majority in the Legislative Assemblies of both states.
