India has joined as a founding member of the 'Alliance for Poverty Eradication' at the United Nations. This coalition, formed by the President of the United Nations General Assembly, aims to focus efforts on boosting the global economy after the coronavirus global epidemic.
Tijjani Mohammed-Bande, President of the 74th session of the General Assembly, will formally launch the 'Alliance for Poverty Eradication' on 30 June. He said that this alliance will provide a platform to member countries to create awareness about the threats posed by poverty to world peace, human rights and sustainable development.
India has joined this alliance as a founding member. India has emphasized that poverty will not be eradicated only by monetary compensation, it is equally necessary to ensure quality education, healthcare, clean water, sanitation, proper housing and social security for the poor.
Nagaraj Naidu, India's permanent deputy representative at the United Nations, said that 'many people in the world are so hungry that for them, getting bread is like getting God. It is surprising that just a little over 2,000 billionaires have more wealth than 60 percent of the planet's wealth. ' Naidu said in an informal meeting with the President of the General Assembly and members of the coalition on Tuesday that 'poverty is like punishment without any crime'.
Naidu said that the Alliance should analyze poverty from the perspective of multiple deprivations. He said that 'For example, people in the same house are affected by poverty in different ways. Even though the figures are limited in this regard, there is evidence that women and children are affected in an inconsistent way by poverty. '
