The first match of the 3-match ODI series was played between India and Australia at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, in which the host Indian team suffered a major defeat. The Australian team beat India by 10 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series. In this match, Australian team openers David Warner and Aaron Finch scored centuries.

In this match, Australian captain Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bowl first. Batting first, the Indian team collapsed by scoring 255 runs in 49.1 overs, with Shikhar Dhawan scoring 74 and KL Rahul scoring 47 runs. Apart from these two batsmen, no Indian player could manage to play a big innings. For Australia, Mitchell Starc took 3 wickets, Pat Cummins and Kane Richardson took 2–2 wickets.

Meanwhile, chasing the target of 256 runs, the Australian team achieved this target in 37.4 overs with the centuries of David Warner and Aaron Finch. Warner returned unbeaten after scoring 128 and Finch scored 110 runs. In this match, no Indian player took a single wicket. All three fast bowlers of the team gave runs at an average of 7, while both spinners gave runs at an average of more than 5. The second match will be played on 17 January in Rajkot.
