Increase in Cancer rates over past year is by 324%

Between 2017 and 2018, cases of common cancers including oral cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer have increased by 324%. This information has come out from the data of National Health Profile 2019. These cases have been recorded in the NCD (Non-Communicable Disease) clinics of the states. In 2018, 6.5 crore people visited these clinics for screening of which 1.6 lakh people got cancer whereas in 2017 only 39,635 cases of these cases were detected. However, the number of NCD clinics from 2017 to 2018 also doubled. It was earlier 3.5 crores which reached 6.6 crores.

Experts believe that the reason for the progression of the disease is the changing lifestyle, including stress, eating habits, tobacco and alcohol consumption. In 2018, the highest number of cancer cases were found in Gujarat, followed by Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana and West Bengal.

For instance, Gujarat had 3939 common cancer cases in 2017 which reached 72,169 by 2018. This means that 68,230 new cases were recorded.

Even in states like Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, where the number of diagnostic cases was less, there was a big jump in the number till 2018.

Dr Harpreet Singh, Senior Consultant Oncologist at Action Cancer Hospital, says oral tobacco products are responsible for most tobacco products, especially when taken with alcohol, the risk is further increased. Apart from this, sitting lifestyle and increasing obesity are also increasing all types of cancer. Doctors also recommend breast feeding to avoid breast cancer.
