Incident of Gujarat: Corona patient dies after donating Sperm

His wife's lawyer informed him about the death of the patient on Friday morning. The wife of the deceased had filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court

A corona-infected person whose sperms were collected by a private hospital on Wednesday in Vadodara, Gujarat, died on Thursday evening. His wife's lawyer informed him about the death of the patient on Friday morning. The wife of the deceased had filed a petition in the Gujarat High Court that her husband's sperm be collected so that she could become a mother. The patient's sperm were collected on Wednesday after the court's direction. A 32-year-old man was put on life support at Vadodara's Sterling Hospital due to multiple organ failure after being infected with the coronavirus.

The woman had appealed in the High Court

A Canadian woman, while requesting the Gujarat High Court, said, 'My husband is on his deathbed. I want to get motherly happiness from her sperm, but the law does not allow it. As the last sign of our love, please give me her sperm as a part of my husband. Doctors say that my husband has very little time. He is on a ventilator. The woman's in-laws are in Vadodara.

When the matter came up for hearing before the High Court on Tuesday, the court was astonished for a moment. But seeing in the woman's love for her husband and respect for the law, the court immediately allowed her to take her husband's sperm.

Woman's pain, in her own words…

'We came in contact with each other 4 years ago in Canada. We got married there in October 2020. After four months of marriage, I got the news that my father-in-law living in India had suffered a heart attack. In February 2021, I returned to India with my husband so that we could serve my father-in-law. We both started taking care of them. During this time my husband got corona. He got treatment but from May 10, due to his health being critical, he was admitted to a private hospital in Vadodara. His health continued to decline. The lung infection increased so much that the lungs stopped working. My husband is battling between life and death on a ventilator for two months.

Doctors said the patient has a maximum of three days' time

The woman told that, three days ago, doctors called me and my mother-in-law and said that there is little scope for improvement in my husband's health. The condition is such that they only have at most three days' time. Hearing this, I told the doctor that I wanted to take motherhood from my husband's share. For this, their sperm is needed. The doctors expressed respect for our love and said that according to the Medico-Legal Act, a sperm sample cannot be taken without the husband's approval.

The woman further says that, when the doctor did not agree even after my request, I along with my father-in-law decided to approach the Gujarat High Court. Before we went to the High Court, the doctors told us that my husband has only 24 hours left. We filed a petition in the High Court on Monday evening and requested for urgent hearing on the second day. The matter came up for hearing on Tuesday before a two-member bench of the High Court. After 15 minutes the court gave its verdict in my favor.

Sperm were taken after a court order

Sterling Hospital zonal director Anil Kumar Nambiar says that our team had completed the medical process as soon as the High Court order was received. After this, the patient's sperm was taken on the second day. Now we are going to start the process of IVF treatment. Regarding the patient, Nambiar says that the patient was in a dying condition. The infection in his lungs had reached 95 percent and all chances of survival were zero. Our team did everything possible to save his life. Even while taking sperm, the team of doctors had controlled the bleeding.
