In Assam, where preparations for implementation of the National Citizen Register (NRC) are fully advanced, the Home Ministry has been involved in preparing for the expulsion of illegal migrants from across the country.
On May 30, the Central Government made the road forward to the NRC by declaring the amendment in the FTs (Foreigners Tribunals) Order 1964. District Magistrate along with the State Governments have been empowered to form tribunals to identify illegal migrants living in all the States and Union Territories by order of amendment. Until now only the Center had the right to form such tribunal which was only as an archetypal body in Assam.
Under the Supreme Court, the eyes of the nation on the NRC process in Assam are fixed as many lakhs of people will become state-wise as its final list is released. NRC was formed for the first time in Assam in 1951. It was updated according to the instructions of the Supreme Court to separate migrants and Indian nationals from Bangladesh from the state after March 25, 1971.
Emphasizing the need to implement NRC not only in Assam but also in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that according to the international law, the government will remove the illegal migrants living in India from every inch of the country. The court had asked the Center and the Assam Government to publish the final list under the NRC till July 31, but demanded additional time from both of them so that verification could be done again.
Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai had said in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that there may be some delay in finalizing the NRC as the government does not want illegal immigrants to remain and to remove the real citizen.
