Hindi remains the most spoken Indian language in America. This is followed by Gujarati and Telugu speakers. According to the data, Hindi was the most spoken Indian language in the US with 8.74 lakh people as of July 1, 2018, a Slight increase of 1.3% over the 2017 figures.

In the 8 years since 2010, this number added 2.65 lakh people, an increase of 43.5 percent. However, in terms of percentage, the number of Telugu-speaking persons increased significantly in the US from speakers of other Indian languages, which increased by 79.5% between 2010 and 2018.

According to the 2018 data from the American Community Survey (ACS), (which measures the US population, as of July 1, 2018), the country has 6.73 million residents over the age of 5 and who are originally US-born, legal and illegal immigrants, speaking a language other than English at their home.

As a share of the population, 21.9 percent of Americans speak a foreign language at home, a slight increase from the 2017 figures (21.8%). This survey of ACS covered more than 2 million families in the US.

There are 3.75 lakh Bengali-speaking people in the total population of America, which increased by about 68 percent in the same eight-year period. It is followed by 3.08 lakh people who speak Tamil (as of July 1, 2018), an increase of 67.5 percent.

It is worth noting that people from countries other than India also speak Bengali, which consists mainly of people from Bangladesh. Tamil is spoken in countries such as Sri Lanka, Singapore and Malaysia.

Surprisingly, the number of Gujarati and Telugu speakers has declined slightly between 2017 and 2018. The number of Gujarati-speaking people is 4.19 lakh, which is 3.5 percent less than last year. Explain that as of July 1, 2018, 4 lakh Telugu speaking people were in America.

If the year 2010 is compared with the figures of 2018, the number of Telugu speakers increased from 2.23 lakhs to 4 lakhs, showing an increase of 79.5 percent. It is not surprising to see the technology sector employees working in the US who are said to come from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in large numbers.

However, English is not a challenge for most Indian language speakers. For example, more than 80% of the population who speak Hindi, Telugu and Tamil at home said that they speak English very well.
