The home kitchen is beneficial for humans in Ayurveda, for health in every way, and in the same kitchen, we also use the best edible oil for cooking. Do you know that those who are buying the most expensive and most essential edible oil from the market, instead of making your health, they are playing with your health? The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) reported on Wednesday. In which it was told that out of the samples taken from all over the country, 24.2 percent of samples did not meet the standards.
According to FSSAI, 4,461 samples of 15 types of edible oils were taken from 587 districts and four metro cities of the country. In this 2.42% i.e. 108 samples were found to be completely defective. Aflatoxins, pesticides, lethal chemicals, and a large number of metals were found in these oils, which can prove to be dangerous for health. Not only this, the quality of 24.2% i.e. 1,080 samples was found to be very poor. Hydrocyanic acid was found in these samples, which is a kind of toxic chemical. Apart from this, other components such as BR reading, fatty acid profile, and iodine value are found more than the prescribed limit, which can have serious effects on health.
According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, about 12.8 percent of the total samples in 572 did not live up to the claims made on the label of the product. They had claimed on the label of getting vitamins A and D, but all these claims failed in the investigation. Which were placed in the misbranding category. On the other hand, many edible oils showed adulteration of other oils or chemicals, while some could not meet the standards like self-life.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has issued orders for mustard oil, coconut oil, palm oil, mixed oil, cottonseed oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, groundnut oil, canola oil from different states of the country between 25 to 27 August 2020. Samples of rice brain oil, sesame oil, corn oil, linseed oil, and other unlisted oils were taken. After which they were sent to different register laboratories of the authority for testing, where they were tested on parameters like safety, quality, and misbranding.
After getting the samples tested, FSSAI held a meeting with various stakeholders on 9th September 2021. In this, by sharing the oil survey report, the companies expressed concern about the quality and safety. The department asked the oil-producing companies to take appropriate steps on their behalf regarding adulteration. The meeting was also attended by the officials of the Food Department of the states, representatives of oil processing companies, representatives of the concerned ministries and departments.
FSSAI has ordered enforcement agencies and state investigative units to stop adulteration after a large amount of adulteration was detected. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Processing has issued orders to stop the adulteration of edible oils across the country on the appeal of FSSAI. It has been told from the side of the ministry that rules should be made for strict action against adulterants and this should be controlled by technology and other methods.
