Former Indian all-rounder Bapu Nadkarni, who set a record for bowling 21 consecutive maiden overs in a Test match against England, died on Friday. He was 86 years old. He lived most of his life at his home in the famous Sportsfield building in Worli, he was living with his daughter and son-in-law for the last five years in Powai. Indian veteran batsman Sachin Tendulkar and BCCI have mourned on his death on social media. Sachin wrote, 'Very sad to hear about the demise of Shri Bapu Nadkarni. I grew up hearing about the record of him bowling 21 consecutive maiden overs in a Test. My condolences to his family and dear ones. Rest in Peace Sir. '
Nadkarni was among the top cricketers in Mumbai. He played 191 first-class matches, taking 500 wickets and scoring 8880 runs. Nadkarni made his Test debut against New Zealand in Delhi in 1955 and also played his last Test match against New Zealand in Auckland in 1968 under the leadership of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
He is however remembered for bowling 21 consecutive overs. Nadkarni was the coach of Indian Team for Australian Tour in 1981, which suffered a major controversy with Sunil Gavaskar threatening a walkout in Melbourne Test. He was the Joint secretary of Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) during 1984 World Cup.
