Many countries of Western Europe are facing severe floods these days. So far 59 people have died in Germany and 9 in Belgium due to heavy rains and floods. Officials in the Eukirchen area in western Germany said 15 people were killed in the floods there. At the same time, 18 people died in Rweiler County, three in Reinbach and two in Cologne due to floods.
Ahrweiler County officials said flooding destroyed several houses in the village of Schedule in the Eifel area last night, killing several people and leaving about 70 missing. He said that many people are trapped on the roofs of houses and waiting for help. Authorities have deployed boats and helicopters for relief work. The German army has sent 200 soldiers to help with the relief work.
Germany is grappling with the deadliest weather disaster since World War II. Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium are also receiving unusually heavy rains. Due to recent storms and heavy rains, rivers and reservoirs are in spate, breaking their embankments and causing flash floods. Roads were inundated due to the flood, many cars were washed away and buildings were destroyed. Relief and rescue operations are hampered due to loss of phone and internet connectivity.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is on a visit to America these days. He said he was "heartbroken" to see the condition of the flood victims. He said- "I am afraid that we may see more disasters in the coming days. Every effort is being made to help the people during the crisis."
US President Joe Biden called Germany a tragedy after talks with Chancellor Merkel. "I express my deepest condolences for the destruction caused by the floods in Germany and neighboring countries over the past 24 hours. Deepest condolences to the American people for the catastrophic loss of life and loss," he said.
There are also reports of loss of life and property due to floods from neighboring Belgium. According to the report, nine people have died in the eastern Vervese of Belgium. Several highways have been submerged and rail-road traffic has come to a standstill in the southern and eastern regions of the country.
European Union President Ursula von der Lane has promised to help those affected. He tweeted- My condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the devastating floods in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. I sympathize with those whose houses have been destroyed in this calamity. The European Union is ready to help.
