Actress Ashalata Wabgaonkar, who has worked in Marathi and Hindi films, died on Tuesday at the age of 83. She was admitted to a private hospital in Satara, Maharashtra, after being found corona infected. She last breathed her last at around 4.45 AM on Tuesday morning.

According to the family, she arrived in Satara to shoot her Marathi serial ‘Aai Kalubai’. After the symptoms of the corona were found, she was tested for the same. Ashalata was admitted to the ICU after confirming the infection and breathing problems. Because of the corona, Ashalata will be cremated in Satara.

Born on 31 May 1941 in Goa, Ashalata was famous as a Marathi singer, playwright and film actress. She completed her school from St. Colombo High School in Girgaon, Mumbai. She also worked part-time in the ministry for some time after the 12th. During this time, she completed her graduation in arts and post-graduation. She completed her MA in Psychology from Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University. She also sang some Konkani songs on the Mumbai center of All India Radio.

Ashalata acted in more than 100 Hindi and Marathi films. For the first time in Bollywood, she appeared in Basu Chatterjee’s film Apne Paraye. For this, she received the ‘Bengal Critics Award’ and the Filmfare for Best Supporting Actor. She played the role of Amitabh Bachchan’s stepmother in the film ‘Zanjeer’. Ashalata has acted in many brilliant Hindi films including Ankush, Apne Paraye, Ahista Ahista, Shaukeen, Woh Saat Din, Namak Halal and Yaadon Ki Kasam.

Ashalata made her dramatic debut in the role of Revathi in the play ‘Sangeet Sanshaykallol’ presented by ‘The Goa Hindu Association’. The Marathi drama ‘Matsyagandha’ proved to be a milestone in Ashalata’s acting career. In this, she also sang the songs ‘Garda Sabhoti Chali Sajni Tu Tar Chafekali’, ‘Artha Shunya Bhase Majala Kala Jeevan’.
