Toxic CarbonDioxide Emissions Reduced for the First Time in Four Decades

Already, the economy of the country is experiencing a slowdown before the onset of the coronavirus (Covid-19) invasion.  This is a matter of concern, but at the same time the atmosphere has been purified because of the reduction in emissions of many types of toxic substances.  The most prominent of these is carbon dioxide.

Apart from the slowdown in the economy, the main reasons for the decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) levels are the nationwide lockdown implemented in the wake of coronavirus infection.  Apart from this, the increase in use of clean energy in recent years has also stopped the increasing pace of environmental pollution.

Based on the latest data on coal, petroleum oil and gas use, CREA analysts have concluded that CO2 emissions have decreased by 30 million tonnes during 2019-20 as compared to FY 2018-19.

Let us tell you that the fields of energy and transportation are most responsible for the pollution caused by carbon dioxide in the country.  Every year coal-fired thermal power stations emit 92 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).  According to the CREA report, coal-based energy generation declined by 15 per cent in March this year and by 31 per cent in the first three weeks of April.  In contrast, in March this year, electricity generation from renewable energy sources like sun and wind has increased by 6.4 percent.

The first effect of increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the environment is that it reduces the amount of oxygen.  This causes problems like shortness of breath, rapid heartbeat, and even mental imbalance.  Increasing levels of CO2 can prove to be fatal, especially for people suffering from asthma and other respiratory diseases.
