Tamilians are not Happy with the Teaser of Karan Johar’s Latest Film

Recently a teaser of Karan Johar's latest production, Meenakshi Sundareshwar is dropped. Although it received good reactions online. But Tamilians are not liking the Teaser of the film at all. The film has Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani as the leads. The two are playing the role of a newly-wed couple.  And trying to showcase a long-distance marriage in the film.

Apparently, people are not pleased with how the film has stereotyped Tamilians. The film casually mentions Rajinikanth and Tamil songs are also played in the background. In fact, the janta is asking for Bollywood to do better, and have better representation. People said where are the South Indian actors?

Releasing on Netflix

'Meenakshi Sundareshwar', produced by Karan Johar's Dramatic Entertainment, is stared by Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani. It is all set to release on Netflix on November 5. The Netflix film is about a long-distance romance. In the film, the lead pair finds love in an arranged marriage setup. However, it is shadowed when the characters depict the age-old tropes that we have seen a few hundred times. Including a Thalaiva connect.

Stereotypical and caricaturish characters

Bollywood is notorious when it comes to stereotypical and caricaturish characters. And they are often used as punching bags for comic relief. Be it the Gujrati mota Bhai who only talks in an inaccurate accent. Or the Punjabi best friend who can't help but go balle balle at every alternate thing. Its representation was confined to mimicking and generalizing cultures. And we have more than a few examples of the same.

Among others, the South Indian Tamilian has also borne the brunt of trope treatment. It has reduced his/her/their identity to English-speaking, veg-eating, and Rajinikanth-loving Brahmins. In fact, according to Twitter, there's another example of the same. The teaser of Karan Johar's Meenakshi Sundareshwar just dropped. It has stirred the exact debate online because of the 'gross stereotyping'.

Tamilians comments on the Teaser

Needless to say, Tamilians have had it with Bollywood trying to box them in the same tired brackets. And at the same time have taken it to social media to point out things wrong with the teaser.

However, one can still hope that the film fares better when the trailer drops eventually making way of the film. Meenakshi Sundareshwar will mark the digital debut of Dassani of Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. And the directorial debut of Vivek Soni who has also co-written the film with Aarsh Vora. Film produced by Karan Johar, Meenakshi Sundareshwar is all set to release on Netflix on November 5.
