Nightingale of India: Lata Mangeshkar, Passes Away at 92

Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar died on February 6 at a hospital in Mumbai, her sister Usha Mangeshkar said.

Lata Mangeshkar, the legendary Indian film singer, spent over 29 days in the ICU at Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital. On Saturday, the 92-year-old singer's condition had deteriorated. Dr. Pratat Samdani, who was treating her, said she was receiving rigorous treatment and that she was able to endure it. Lata Mangeshkar's younger sister, veteran singer Asha Bhosle, arrived at Breach Candy Hospital a few hours later to check on her. Singing legend Lata Mangeshkar died on February 6 at a hospital in Mumbai, her sister Usha Mangeshkar said.

Lataji was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, to a Marathi family. Swara Kokila is an Indian actress. Shri Deenanath Mangeshkar ji, Lataji's father, was a well-known figure in the film industry that began teaching his daughter music at the age of five.

Lataji began performing on stage in theatre when she was seven years old, and as a result, she was unable to complete her education. Her family then relocated to Mumbai. Following her father's death, she was left to handle the entire family's duties. She found work as a child artist in eight Marathi and Hindi films, in which she performed admirably. She stopped acting in films in 1948, believing it would be a detriment to her music, and began a career as a backstage singer.

Film songs were in direct rivalry with classical singers like Noor Jahan, Amirbai, Shamnad Begum, and Rajkumari by the time Lata ji established herself as a playback vocalist. To make her impact, she had to overcome numerous obstacles.

It was for a Marathi film that she wrote her debut song, whose name was Kiti Hasal, but the censor board removed this song. She had a natural musical voice and had put in a lot of effort, so she had to travel more for herself now. But she was on the lookout for an opportunity, which she quickly found.

When Lata Mangeshkar sang for the film Mahal, Aayega Aane Wala Aayega, and then Andaz for Barsaat in 1949, the entire country of India was enthralled by her wonderful voice. And after that, she became one of the music emperors. She went on to become a well-known playback vocalist.

She has collaborated with music legends such as Rafi, Mukesh Kumar, and Kishore Kumar on hundreds of songs. Lata ji was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records in 1974 for singing the most number of songs by a singer.

She received numerous awards for her services to Indian and Hindi music as a playback vocalist. For the years 1958, 62, 65, 69, 93, and 1994, Lata Mangeshkar received the Filmfare Award. She's also won the National Award three times. In 1969, the Indian government bestowed the Padma Bhushan upon her.

The Lata Mangeshkar Award in the realm of music was established in her honor in the state of Madhya Pradesh. This is the first time in Indian history that artists have received prizes while they are still alive. Lata ji received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989.
