HFPA Controversy: Tom Cruise Returns his Three Golden Globe Awards

Superstar Tom Cruise has returned three of his Golden Globe Awards amid an ongoing controversy over the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). According to reports, NBC has announced not to broadcast the Golden Globe Awards in the year 2022 before Tom Cruise returned the award.

Tom Cruise won the Award for 'Born on the Fourth of July' in 1990 and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 1997 for 'Jerry Maguire'. Apart from this, he was also awarded the Best Supporting Actor Award for 'Magnolia' in the year 2000.

HFPA also faces allegations of racist remarks and favors

The network said in a statement, "We believe that HFPA is committed to meaningful improvement. However, it takes work and time to make changes. We expect HFPA to need time to get it right."

The controversy began after a report from a Los Angeles media outlet. In which it was reported that the organization did not include a single black journalist among its erstwhile 87 members. HFPA members have also been accused of making sexist, racist remarks and favors from celebrities and studios.

Netflix and Amazon won't even work with HFPA

The HFPA membership last week also voted to approve a resolution of reforms aimed at addressing the lack of diversity and other ethics issues. But, a coalition of Time Up and PR firms and many in Hollywood say that the reforms do not last long.

The news comes after the announcement by Netflix and Amazon Studios, both of which stated that they would no longer work with HFPA. Unless the organization makes a comprehensive change.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tom Cruise is the latest Hollywood actor to express his disapproval with the HFPA. Earlier, actress Scarlett Johansson, who was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards four times, also urged the people of the Hollywood industry to step back from the HFPA. On the other hand, Golden Globe winner Mark Ruffalo said in a recent statement, "Now is the right time to step up and rectify past mistakes."
