There are many such tales of Shabana Azmi's life, about which most people would not know. For example, in her mother Shaukat Azmi's autobiography 'Kaif and I Memoir', it was revealed that Shabana had attempted suicide twice as a child. Let us tell you that Shaukat has been an actress. She worked in films like 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Salaam Bombay'. She passed away in May 2019.

What is written in Shaukat's autobiography…

Shaukat wrote in Autobiography, "Shabana felt that I loved Baba (Shabana's younger brother) more than her. One morning I was serving breakfast to Shabana (9) and Baba (6). I picked up a toast from Shabana's plate and said- Daughter, Baba's bus will arrive soon, so I am Giving him your toast. You have time. I sent the servant to get some bread and Shabana quietly left the breakfast table.

When the servant returned, I gave a voice to Shabana that come daughter, your toast is ready. I heard her crying from the bathroom and ran there. She saw me and hurriedly went to school wiping tears." Shaukat further wrote, "Shabana went to the school's laboratory and ate some Neela Thota (Copper Sulphate). When her best friend Parna told that Shabana had told her that you love Baba more than her, I held my head in despair.

When Shabana came in front of the train

Shabana also did the second suicide attempt in her childhood. Shaukat wrote in the book, "I remember another incident when I asked her to leave the house because of her rude behavior. Then I came to know that at Grant Road railway station she tried to come in front of the train. Luckily her school's watchman was there. He pulled her over saying 'Baby… Baby what's going on. Shabana survived the second time too, but I was upset. Then I decided to let her the way she is. Then I thought will have to think twice before asking her to leave the house."

Never asked for extra money from parents

Shaukat has written in her book that Shabana has been principled since childhood. According to Shaukat, "I used to give Shabana 30 paise a day for the bus from Juhu to Santacruz station. If she needed any snacks, she would get down at Juhu Chowpatty to save five paise. But she never asked us for extra money. It was only Shabana's best friend Parna who told me about it.

Used to sell coffee for 30 rupees per day

According to Shaukat, Shabana always thought of earning money to help the family. She wrote in the book, "After passing the first division in Senior Cambridge, before taking admission in a college, Shabana sold brew coffee at a petrol station for three months. From this, she used to get 30 rupees per day. She never told me about it. And I was too busy with rehearsals to not notice her absence. One day she brought me all the money, then I asked her about it. She said she had three months, which she used."

Shabana was once in a relationship with Shekhar Kapur

Shabana Azmi had confessed in an interview that she has been in a relationship with Shekhar Kapur, director of films like 'Bandit Queen', for many years. Their breakup also happened by mutual consent. Shabana had also said that even when they broke up, she did a film with Shekhar. Its director was Shekhar and his wife Medha was assisting him.

Shabana had a crush on Shashi Kapoor

During an interview in 2004, Shabana admitted that she had a crush on Shashi Kapoor. Shabana said, "Shashi and his wife Jennifer were our family friends. Prithviraj Kapoor used to live next to my parents and every Sunday when Shashi would come to meet Papa, I would buy a photo for his sign. When I used to do 'Fakira' ( When I was selected for 1976), I was nervous. He was a big hero. Shashi and Jennifer made me beautiful."

Trying to break up several times before marriage

During an interview in 2004, Shabana had said, "Javed often used to come to Abba with poetry and seek advice. When I got to know him, he was somewhat funny, well-informed, and in many ways like Abba. That was the reason. That I was attracted to him. Javed was already married. So we tried to break up several times. Later he divorced his first wife and we got married on 9th December 1984."

Let us tell you that Javed Akhtar's first marriage was with Honey Irani. Both have two children. Javed and Honey were married in March 1972, and 7 months later, in October 1972, they became parents to daughter Zoya. Their son Farhan Akhtar was born in 1974. Significantly, Shabana and Javed do not have any children.
