Hollywood star Dame Maggie Smith has passed away at the age of 89. She portrayed the character of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the 'Harry Potter' series. In a statement, her two sons shared the news of her passing.
Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens shared that Dame Maggie Smith passed away in a London hospital. In their statement, they wrote: "Dame Maggie leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was a true legend of her time, delivering many outstanding on-screen performances. She will live on in our memories forever."
Her career began in theatre, but she earned her first BAFTA nomination for the 1958 melodrama Nowhere to Go. By 1963, she was offered the role of Desdemona opposite Laurence Olivier at the National Theatre, and two years later, the play was adapted into a film with the original cast, earning Smith an Oscar nomination.
Dame Maggie Smith won two Academy Awards during her illustrious career. She received the Oscar for Best Actress in 1970 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1978 for California Suite.
