Formation of UPSC: The Union Public Service Commission is a central-level organization responsible for conducting recruitment for civil services like IAS, IPS, NDA and CDS for the purpose of safeguarding the laws and territory of India.

The provisions of the commission are described under Article 315 to Article 323 of part XIV of the constitution.

The UPSC consists of 9-11 members with a chairman. These appointments are given by the President of India to the government officers who have deliberately served the Government for more than 10 years at any state or central level.

There is no direct commission or specific field needed to be selected as a member of the UPSC. The whole selection depends on the choice of the President.

The committee was first established on October 1, 1926 as Public Service Commission, it was later reconstituted as Federal Public Service Commission under the "Government of India Act 1935".

History

The commission for the selection of superior civil servants was set up under the leadership of Lord Lee of Fareham by British India in 1923 with the equal contribution of British officers and Indian officers.

Later, the distribution of positions was given to three categories including Britishers, Indians, and selection from the government offices.

This initiated the first Public Service Commission under the chairperson Sir Ross Barker and the commission gets known as the "Federal Public Service Commission".

After independence in 1947, the commission is known as UPSC and was given a status in the Constitution of India on 26 January 1950.
