Helicopter Crash on Training: Army’s Dhruv Crashes in Ranjit Sagar Dam Near Pathankot

Army's ALH Dhruv helicopter crashed in Ranjit Sagar Dam near Pathankot on Tuesday. This helicopter of 254 Army Aviation was on a training flight and its pilot was being trained to fly at low altitude. However, the search is on for the pilot and co-pilot after the accident. However, earlier it was reported that both are safe in the accident. Rescue operation of NDRF and Police is going on.

The Dhruv helicopter of the Army's Aviation Squadron took off from Mamoon Cantt at 10:20 am. The helicopter was flying very low above Ranjit Sagar Dam and it crashed. Indigenous Dhruv helicopter has crashed for the second time in the last 6 months. However, the Dhruv helicopter has been developed in India itself. It has been developed under the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) project of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

Search continues with the help of ship and divers

The accident took place at Ranjit Sagar Dam in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir adjoining Punjab Pathankot. The search is on for the helicopter with the help of boats and divers. The location of the helicopter is not known due to the high depth. A ship of the Punjab government is present in the dam for inspection. It is also used to tour the tourists visiting the dam. Right now, with its help, efforts are being made to find the helicopter.

Ranjit Sagar Dam is built on the Ravi river

Irrigation water and electricity are provided to Punjab from Ranjit Sagar Dam. Also, the work of power generation here is done by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. 60% of the dam comes in Jammu and Kashmir, while 40% area in Punjab. This dam is built on the Ravi river. Ravi Punjab passes through Shahpur Kandi to Ajnala and then to Pakistan. Pathankot of Punjab and Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir come around Ranjit Sagar Dam.

On 17 April 2020, the Apache helicopter had an emergency land in the fields of Hoshiarpur. It was landed due to a technical fault. In both, the pilots survived safely. This helicopter of the Indian Air Force also flew from the Pathankot airbase itself.

On 25 January 2021, the Indian Army's Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv crashed in Kathua, Jammu, and Kashmir. The accident happened in Lakhanpur. Both the pilots of the helicopter were seriously injured. They were taken to the nearby Military Base Hospital, where a pilot succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

On 19 July 2018, an Air Force MiG-21 crashed in Patta village of Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. This place is 40 km away from Pathancourt airbase. The pilot was killed in this accident.
