Cyclone Yaas: 52 NDRF Teams deployed in Odisha, Red Alert Issued for 4 Districts

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the landfall of cyclone Yaas in coastal areas of Odisha on May 26.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the landfall of cyclone Yaas in coastal areas of Odisha on May 26. Meanwhile, the state on Tuesday issued a red alert warning for 4 districts – Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Balasore. According to information, these districts are likely to be affected by heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, Umashankar Das, Deputy Director of (IMD) said, "A red alert, i.e. extremely heavy rainfall warning has issue for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, and Balasore for today. The rainfall will exceed more than 20 cm." According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Cyclonic storm 'Yaas' is likely to make landfall near Dhamra Port in Odisha's Bhadrak district early on Wednesday morning.

Orange alert issued in 5 districts:

According to officials, an orange alert, i.e. heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khorda, and Puri today. Das further said, "The rainfall in the district expected to measure between 12-20 cms. We are expecting wind speeds of 150-160 kmph gusting 180kmph over Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore tomorrow as landfall expected by noon. We have issued the highest danger warning for Dhamra and Paradip ports."

1200 centers to be used as shelters:

Meanwhile, the Balasore district administration and Marine Police Forces have evacuated people in the Chandipur area, ahead of the cyclonic storm. Meanwhile, District of Collector Balasore K Sudarshan Chakravarthy said."We are focusing on the evacuation of people from low-lying areas. 1,200 centers will use as shelters. We have health teams deployed at these centers. Power restoration and road clearance teams deployed."
