Cyclone Tauktae: NDRF Deploys 24 Teams after Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that a cyclonic disturbance will be formed over Lakshadweep and the Arabian Sea in the next 36 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that a cyclonic disturbance will be formed over Lakshadweep and the Arabian Sea in the next 36 hours. The storm 'Tauktae' can cause havoc in many parts of the country including Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka.

Meanwhile, IMD has issued an alert in this regard. In view of this, the National Disaster Response Force has deployed several teams on the ground. National Disaster Response Force DG SN Pradhan said that 24 teams have already been deployed in Kerala, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra and 29 teams are on standby due to the cyclonic storm.

Red alert issued in Kerala's 8 districts:

Meanwhile, the storm is likely to hit Kerala in the next 24 hours. The IMD has issued Red-alert in eight districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikkode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod.  According to an IMD statement, "A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area today. It is very likely to become well-marked over the Lakshadweep area by May 14th morning, concentrate into a depression over the same region by 15th morning and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to intensify further and move north-northwestwards towards Gujarat and adjoining Pakistan coasts and likely to reach Gujarat coasts around May 18th evening."

On the other hand, a "high intensity" cyclone expected to reach the Gujarat coast by May 18. In a warning, IMD predicted intense showers in Gujarat on May 17. The state will have extremely heavy rainfall at Saurashtra and Kutch on May 18 and 19.

Extreme rainfall expected at Lakshadweep:

Due to cyclonic disturbance, extreme rainfall is also likely over Lakshadweep in the next 24 hours. According to IMD, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will experience extremely heavy rainfalls till 16 May. A red alert has been issued in three districts of Lakshadweep and five districts of Kerala on Saturday.
