Poonawalla had met Home Minister Amit Shah and Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Friday. After this, he told the media that another corona vaccine of the Serum Institute, Covovax, is expected to be launched by October. Also told that Kovovax for children can come in January-February next year.

Poonawalla said that Covovax will also be a two-dose vaccine and its price will be decided at the time of launch. Serum Institute has told that more than 1400 people involved in Phase-2 and Phase-3 trials of Covovax in the country have received the first dose. They have not shown any signs of concern so far.

Approval for trial on children of 2-17 years was received last month

Based on the results of the trial so far, the company says that after getting approval for the use of Covovax for people above 18 years, preparations can be started to launch it for children as well. According to sources in news agency PTI, the Central Drug Authority's expert panel had approved the Phase-2 and Phase-3 trials of Covovax on children between the ages of 2 and 17 years last month. 920 children from 10 cities will be included in this trial. Of these, 460 children will be in the age group of 2-11 years and 460 children will be in the age group of 12-17 years.

Serum Institute has an agreement with the American company Novavax for the manufacturing of Covovax in India. The Serum Institute had also given the country's first vaccine of Corona, Coveshield. The Serum Institute had tied up with Oxford University and UK-based AstraZeneca for CoviShield.

Serum Institute's Covishield, Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, and Russia's Sputnik-V are currently being used in vaccination drives in the country. Apart from this, DRDO has made 2-DG medicine for the prevention of Covid. Its emergency use has also been approved. It is a powder, which is dissolved in water.

What is the status of the vaccine for children in India?

Bharat Biotech's Covaxin is undergoing trials on children. Serum Institute, which manufactures CoviShield, is also preparing to make Covovax, a children's vaccine. At the same time, the clinical trial of Zydus Cadila's vaccine Zykov-D has been completed. He is awaiting approval. It can be used for adults as well as children. The government hopes that the vaccination of children can start in August-September.
