Shocking research has come to the fore amidst the threat of the third wave of coronavirus. It states that if a child below the age of 3 years is infected with corona, then the risk of spreading the infection to the elders of the household is high. Researchers from Canada's health agency Public Health, Ontario have made this claim.
According to this research published in JAMA Network Open, the risk of getting infected from household members from children under three years of age is 1.4 times higher than that of adolescents aged 14 to 17 years. In addition, people between the ages of 20 and 40 have a higher risk of infection from younger children, while those between the ages of 40 and 60 have a higher risk of infection from older children. Researchers believe that the risk of infection from young children is also higher because they have more physical contact with other members of the household. Also, it is difficult to isolate young children, in such a situation that their caregivers increase the risk of infection.
The research was done to understand the extent to which there is a risk of transmission of infection from children to adults. The team of researchers visited 6,280 homes where children were infected between 1 June 2020 and 21 December 2020. Children of 4 types of age groups were included in the research. The first from 0 to 3 years, the second from 4 to 8 years, the third from 9 to 13 years, the fourth from 14 to 17 years.
The results showed that the infection spread from 766 infected children aged 0 to 3 years to 234 other members of the household. At the same time, out of 17,636 children in the age group of 14 to 17 years, Covid spread to 2376 family members. Researchers say that 30,548 family members are at risk of getting infected from 1 lakh infected young children. At the same time, the risk of infection from adolescents is less than this. One lakh infected teenagers put 26,768 family members at risk of getting infected.
The first reason is that the load of the virus in the nose and throat of young children is higher than that of older children. The second reason is that there are no symptoms of any kind after infection. Since children are asymptomatic, this infection is easily accessible to adults.
Scientists say that although the infection does not spread very fast from children to adults, still there is a need to be in alert mode. If the child in the household is infected, the parents and other elder members must wear masks during their care.
