Coronavirus pandemic continues wreaking havoc worldwide. According to worldometer.com, so far 161,133,331 COVID-19 cases reported. Of these, 138,957,881 people have been cured, while 3,346,881 people have died.

Meanwhile, 7,51,488 coronavirus cases with 13,843 deaths reported in the last 24 hours in the world. At the same time, Brazil reported 76,638 cases in the last 24 hours.

Religious, Political events fueled India Covid surge: WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday said a recent risk assessment of the situation in India found that "resurgence and acceleration" of COVID-19 transmission in the country had several potential contributing factors, including "several religious and political mass gathering events which increased social mixing".

According to the update, "The resurgence in COVID-19 cases and deaths in India has raised questions on the potential role of B.1.617 and other variants (e.g., B.1.1.7) in circulation. the prevalence of several VOCs including B.1.1.7 and B.1.612 sublineages increased concurrently to the surge in COVID-19 cases reported in India."

Over 3.62 lakh cases reported in India:

India reported 3,62,727 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative count of the cases to 2,37,03,665, the Union Health Ministry reported on Wednesday. With 4,120 people succumbing to the infection in the last 24 hours, the death toll has mounted to 2,58,317. Currently, there are 37,10,525 active cases of COVID-19 in the country.

The country also witnessed as many as 3,52,181 recoveries in the last 24 hours taking the cumulative recoveries to 1,97,34,823. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), as many as 30,94,48,585 samples have been tested for COVID-19 up to May 12. Of these 18,64,594 samples were tested on Tuesday. The total doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered stand at over 17,72,14,256 crore, informed the health ministry.
