5 Deaths, 66 Cases of Delta Plus Variant Reported in Maharashtra

Deaths due to the Delta-plus variant of COVID-19 rose to five in Maharashtra as the state reported three more fatalities from Ratnagiri, Raigad and Beed on Friday.

Deaths due to the Delta-plus variant of COVID-19 rose to five in Maharashtra as the state reported three more fatalities from Ratnagiri, Raigad and Beed on Friday. The toll includes two deaths from Ratnagiri and one each from Mumbai, Raigad and Beed. Caused by a mutation of the virulent Delta strain, Delta-plus infections in the state touched 66 with one addition from Thane on Friday.

In Thane district, another 50-year-old woman was found infected with Delta Plus in genome sequencing, taking the number of Delta Plus patients in the state to 66. Of these, 5 deaths have been confirmed so far. All 5 patients who died were above 65 years old. Two of these patients had taken both doses of COVID-19 vaccine.

10 patients took both doses of the vaccine:

Over 66 patients have tested positive with Delta Plus variant. Of this, 32 are males and 34 are females. Out of this, 10 patients have taken both doses of COVID-19 vaccine, while 8  have taken one dose of vaccine. Of the 18, 2 had taken Covaxin and the rest had received Covishield.

Mumbai ranks third with 11 patients:

Delta Plus variant has been confirmed in 11 people out of the samples sent from Mumbai. Cases includes 13 in Jalgaon, 12 in Ratnagiri, 6 in Thane, 6 in Pune, 3 in Palghar and Raigad districts, 2 in Nanded, Gondia each, Meanwhile, One case each reported from Chandrapur, Akola, Sindhudurg, Sangli, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Kolhapur and Beed.

What are the symptoms of Delta Plus?

Infected people did not show any symptoms other than Delta. Problems such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, loss of smell, joint pain have been seen in Delta.

How effective is COVID-19 vaccine?

The Government of India says that both Covishield and Covaxin, available in India, are effective against COVID-19. However, in some studies conducted abroad, it has been said that the vaccine produces fewer antibodies against this variant than the rest of the variants.
