China: Tunnel filled with Floodwater in Guangdong Province; 13 Died, Rescue Operation Continues

13 out of 14 people trapped in a highway tunnel in Zhuhai Li city of China have died. The rescue team recovered 10 more bodies on Wednesday. A person trapped in the tunnel has not been contacted yet. The rescue operation is on. People were trapped inside as the tunnel was flooded with water.

On July 15, the Shijingshan tunnel under a reservoir suddenly began to fill with water, leaving 14 workers trapped more than a kilometre from the entry gate. The tunnel is part of a major expressway in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, that connects the coastal city with bridges to neighbouring Macau and Hong Kong. Earlier in March, two labourers died when the wall of this tunnel collapsed.

33 killed in floods in Henan

At the same time, heavy rains caused floods in China Henan province, due to which 33 people have died. 12 people are missing. Around 2 lakh people have been shifted to safer places. The city of Zhengzhou in Henan province received a record 457.5 millimetres (18 inches) of rain in the 24 hours until 5 p.m. Tuesday. Due to this, the power went out in many parts of the city. Roads were submerged in water.

Traffic came to a complete standstill due to floods

More than 160 trains were stopped at Zhengzhou Railway Station. 260 flights to and from the city had to be cancelled at the airport here. The services of more than 80 buses were cancelled due to the floods. More than 100 buses were diverted. Subway services were also temporarily suspended.

Water filled inside a metro train

Many horrifying videos of China's floods have been shared on social media. In a video, it is seen that the metro train is flooded with water and water has reached the neck of the passengers. This video is being told of Zhangzhou station in Henan. Many people are also finding it difficult to breathe. In the video, a woman is seen badly trapped in the train, she is saying that this could be her last message.

China iPhone city also submerged in water

The city is the largest production base for Apple iPhones in the world. Henan factory can make 5 lakh iPhones a day. Local people call the city of Zhengzhou in this province as iPhone City. The company is monitoring the situation. Henan is also the second-largest food supplier province in China. In such a situation, the food supply has also been interrupted. About a quarter of the country's wheat crop is grown here. It is also a major centre for frozen food production. Coal and metals are also supplied from here.

President Xi Jinping has described the floods as very serious. State media quoted Jinping as saying that some dams had broken. People have been injured. There has been the loss of life and property. The floods have made the situation serious. Jinping has asked the authorities to speed up relief and rescue work.
