The Central Government has taken a historic decision on Thursday in the field of medical education. In the field of medical education, 27% reservation will be given to Backward Castes (OBC) and 10% to economically weaker candidates. The decision will come into effect from the 2021-22 session.

Every year 5,550 candidates in MBBS, MS, BDS, MDS, Dental, Medical and Diploma will get the benefit under the All India Quota Scheme (AIQ). Prime Minister Narendra Modi had held a meeting in this regard on July 26 and he had already spoken of giving reservations to these sections. The government has taken this decision three days after the meeting held on July 26.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave information about this through social media. The Union Health Minister said that the government is committed to providing reservations to the backward and weaker income groups in the country.

Student organizations had threatened strike

In fact, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while announcing the date of the National Eligibility Test NEET- 2021 on July 12, said that this time also this exam will be held without reservation for the OBC category.

It was only after this statement that many student organizations were threatening a country-wide strike. Along with this, many political parties had also demanded reservation.

Earlier only SC-ST used to get reservation

Earlier, only SC-ST were being given reservations in the All India quota for admission in medical courses. After which the OBC MPs appealed to PM Modi that the system of the reservation made for OBC and EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) under the Constitution should also be implemented in the All India Quota related to the admission of medical.

What is AIQ Scheme?

The All India Quota Scheme was started in 1986 under the direction of the Supreme Court. Its objective was to enable students from other states to take advantage of reservations in other states as well. Till the year 2008, there was no reservation in the All India Quota Scheme. But, in the year 2007, the Supreme Court introduced 15% reservation for SC and 7.5% for ST in this scheme.
