Center Seeks Report on Action Against Edible Oil Hoarders

The Food and Public Distribution Department of the Central government on Monday asked the states and union territories to submit details of action taken against hoarders of edible oils in excess of the prescribed limit, as per its letter and reminder. An official statement said that except for Uttar Pradesh, which has issued a notification in this regard, other states are either in the process or have not taken any steps.

During the virtual meeting held with all the States/UTs to review the stock limit position on edible oils, the department noted the action taken by the respective States/UTs on their orders dated October 8 and after October 12 and October 22, sought details of reminders with regard to the stock limit on edible oils.

In this regard, Uttar Pradesh has taken the lead and informed that they have already issued a stock limit order on October 12, which will lead to softening of prices, adding that other state departments either in consultation with stakeholders or have submitted a proposal to the State Government for approval.

Presiding over Monday's meeting, Joint Secretary, Food and Public Distribution, Partha S Das stressed that the stock limit is to be notified by each State/UT based on their consumption pattern.

Rajasthan, Gujarat and Haryana have already submitted proposals to the state government and the stock limits are expected to be implemented soon, while the Union Territories of Maharashtra, Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Chandigarh has started the process and will fix stock limits and notify relevant limits for different classes soon.
