The MD of Twitter India will appear at the Loni Border police station on Thursday in connection with the viral video of an Elderly Muslim being assaulted and beard cut in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. According to the report, Twitter India MD Manish Maheshwari along with his lawyer will also come to the police station. In this, they will have to answer 11 questions asked by the police.

The most important question among them is about not removing the misleading video despite its objection. Along with this, he will be asked that when a tweet of BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra was tagged as manipulated, why not in it? Apart from this, the police will also try to know how many people reported on this misleading video and what action did Twitter take after this report.

The Police had Sent a Notice on June 17

On June 17, Ghaziabad Police had sent a legal notice to Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director of Twitter India. The police had asked him to come to Loni Border Police Station and record his statement within 7 days. On this Maheshwari had said that he could join the investigation through video conferencing, but the police had asked him to appear personally before the investigating officer on June 24.

Understand in 3 points – what happened in Ghaziabad?

  1. The Ghaziabad Police of Uttar Pradesh had registered an FIR on June 15, including 9 on Twitter, after a video of an elderly man named Abdul Samad being assaulted and molested in the Loni area on June 14 went viral. This action was taken on all of them due to wrongly giving communal colour to the incident. In a video going viral on social media, it is seen that a Muslim elder was beaten up and his beard was cut.
  2. According to the police, the truth of this case is different. The victim's elder had given some amulets to the accused, due to which the accused did not get the result, the angry accused carried out the incident, but Twitter did not tag this video as 'manipulated media'. The police also told that the victim has not registered in his FIR about raising slogans of Jai Shri Ram and cutting his beard.
  3. Among those who have been booked, Ayub and Naqvi are journalists, while Zubair is the author of fact-checking website Alt News. Dr Shama Mohammed and Nizami are Congress leaders. At the same time, Usmani, a former president of Aligarh Muslim University students' union, was fielded by Congress as a candidate in the Bihar assembly elections in October-November last year.

Why is Twitter in the dock?

It was written in the FIR that the accused did not delete their tweets despite issuing an explanation from the Ghaziabad Police, due to which religious tension increased. Apart from this, no steps were taken by Twitter India and Twitter Communication India Pvt Ltd to remove those tweets. An FIR has been registered against them under sections 153, 153-A, 295-A, 505, 120-B, and 34 of the IPC.
