Canada Open 2019: Parupalli Kashyap Wins Quarter-Final in Three Sets

Former Commonwealth Games champion Parupalli Kashyap produced another gutsy performance to enter the men's singles semifinals at the USD 75,000 Canada Open Super 100 tournament here.

Sixth seed Kashyap, a former world top 10 player, outwitted France's Lucas Claerbout 12-21 23-21 24-22 in a quarterfinal lasting an hour and 16 minutes. Kashyap, who had reached the semifinals at the Indian Open Super 500 tournament, next faces Chinese Taipei's Wang Tzu Wei, who is seeded fourth.

Be that as it may, reigning national champion Sourabh Verma couldn't expand his run in the competition, losing 15-21 11-21 to Li Shi Feng of China in a 38-minute match.

Kashyap had discovered the going extreme at first as Lucas opened up a 5-2 lead in the opening game and after that remained ahead. The Indian decreased the deficiency to 9-10 at one phase yet Lucas continued pushing forward to get the opening game serenely.

In the second, Kashyap opened up an 8-4 lead at an early time but Lucas dealt with a slim 11-10 advantage at the break. After a like there's no tomorrow fight, it was Kashyap, who kept his nerves to skip down and take the match to the decider in spite of wasting three-game points.

In the decider, Lucas zoomed to a 6-1 lead and kept his nose ahead till 18 when Kashyap pawed back and snatched two matches points. The Frenchman spared both to make it 20-20. Kashyap held the bit of leeway again, however, Lucas won the following two earned a match point at 22-21.

An accomplished Kashyap indicated incredible nerves to get three straight points at that point and seal his place in the semi-final.
