LIC was started in 1956
On June 19, 1956, the Parliament passed the Life Insurance Corporation Act and acquired 245 private companies working in the country under it. Thus on 1 September 1956 the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) came into existence.
In 1956, LIC had 5 Zonal Offices, 33 Divisional Offices and 209 Branch Offices across the country. Today there are 8 Zonal Offices, 113 Divisional Offices and 2048 Fully Computerized Branch Offices. Apart from these, there are also 1381 satellite offices. Till 1957, the total business of LIC was about 200 crores. Today it is close to 6 lakh crores.
