After the death of a person, his Aadhaar card can be de-activated. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UDAI) and the Registrar General of India are working on creating and introducing a mechanism for this.
After the death of a person, his Aadhaar does not get deactivated, as there is no such provision at present. The Central Government had said in the Lok Sabha that at present there is no system to cancel the Aadhaar number of a deceased person.
The government had sought suggestions from the UIDAI on the draft amendments to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 by the Registrar General of India. It was mentioned that the Aadhaar of the deceased can be taken while issuing the death certificate. It doesn't happen now. The discussion on the process started with asking for suggestions.
If the process of taking Aadhaar number after death starts between the Registrar of Birth and Death and UDAI then it cannot be misused.
Apart from this, the government is also working on a plan to allot Aadhaar numbers along with birth certificates across the country. At present 20 states have implemented this system. In this, no biometrics of children up to 5 years are taken. They are released on the basis of their parents information. Biometrics (ten fingers and a facial image) are taken when the child turns 5 and 15 years old.
If you have not yet linked your PAN with Aadhaar, get it done soon. If you do not do this till March 31, 2023, your PAN will become inactive. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) is charging a late fee of Rs 1000 for linking PAN with Aadhaar from June 30, 2022 onwards.
