The counting of votes for the by-elections in 15 assembly seats in Karnataka has begun amid tight security. All results are expected later in the afternoon. The results of this by-election will show whether Yeddyurappa's government will survive in the state. All these seats were voted on December 6. More than 61 percent of the voters took part in the voting. BJP 10, while Congress and JDS are leading in two seats each. Independent candidate is leading in another seat.

A total of 165 candidates are in the fray in the 15 assembly segments of Karnataka, which include 126 independents and nine women. BJP and Congress are contesting all 15 assembly seats while JDS has fielded candidates in 12 seats. The BJP has fielded 11 rebel disqualified MLAs who have left the Congress and JDS in the elections. He joined BJP on November 14. The Supreme Court in its ruling on 13 November had allowed them to contest again, keeping the disqualification of the MLAs.
