Balbir has been putting 'puri' in his name from the very beginning. But now after becoming the new Mahant of Shri Baghambri Gaddi, 'Giri' has been added to his name. Actually, Shri Baghambri Gaddi Math was established in 1982 by Mahatma Baba Bal Kishan Giri of Shri Niranjani Akhara. This Giri is believed to be the seat of a Naga Sadhu. For this reason, now after becoming a Mahant, Balbir has got the title of 'Giri'.

Announced on 30 August

Mahant Narendra Giri, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, wanted Balbir Puri to be made the new Mahant of the Baghambari Gaddi Math. For this reason, exactly 10 days after his death, Mahant Balbir Puri of Bilkeshwar Mahadev Temple was declared Mahant of Baghmbri Gaddi. However, this announcement was made in the meeting of Panch Parmeshwar held in Haridwar on 30th August.

The Chadar Vidhi program took place in the presence of Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand Giri Maharaj and Secretary of the Akhara, Ravindra Puri. Shri Niranjani Akhara Secretary Ravindra Puri informed that when a new successor of an Akhara is declared, he is made a Mahant by the Chadar method. This has been the tradition of our Akharas. On the day the Mahant of the arena is done, the Chadar method of the new Mahant is also done on the same day.

Narendra Giri changed his will thrice

After the death of Narendra Giri, there was speculation about the succession. He had declared Balbir Puri as his successor in his will. However, this will was changed thrice by him. Earlier in 2010, Narendra Giri had declared Balvir Puri as his successor. In 2011, Anand Giri was announced as his successor. After a dispute with Anand Giri last year, he announced Balbir Puri as his successor on 2 June 2020.

Who is the new Mahant Balbir Giri?

Balbir Giri was one of the close disciples of Narendra Giri, president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad. In 1998 he came in contact with Niranjani Akhara. He had contact with Narendra Giri in 2001. However, at that time Narendra Giri was the business mahant of Niranjani Akhara.

After this Balbir Giri took initiation from Narendra Giri in the arena and became his disciple. Gradually Narendra came to be regarded as a close and trusted aide of Giri. Whatever responsibility Narendra Giri entrusted to Balbir as an associate, he fulfilled it with full dedication and devotion.

Narendra Giri completely depended and relied on him. During the Kumbh and big festivals, lakhs of rupees coming from the Akhara and math were kept with Balveer. He also played this role well during the Haridwar Kumbh held this year. Controversy and increasing distance from Anand Giri made Balbir Giri closer to Narendra Giri.
